Abstract text:

Imaging has become an indispensable tool for a diverse range of fields ranging from basic research to medicine. It is not surprising that the Nobel Prize was given to Boyle and Smith for their significant contribution to imaging technology in 2009. Unfortunately, conventional image sensors such as CCD and CMOS sensors have fundamental limitations, leaving certain areas of science, industry, and medicine unexplored. In this talk, I will present a few extreme imaging methods that build on radically different principles of image acquisition [1-6]. Furthermore, I will discuss a unique set of applications enabled by the extreme imaging methods, such as cancer detection, biofuel production, phononics, and seismology [1-6].

Biography:

Keisuke Goda is a Professor of Physical Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Tokyo. He obtained his B.A. degree summa cum laude from UC Berkeley in 2001 and his Ph.D. from MIT in 2007, both in physics. At MIT, he worked on gravitational-wave detection in the LIGO group (Nobel Prize 2017). In 2012, he joined the University of Tokyo as a professor. His research group focuses on the development of innovative molecular imaging and spectroscopy technologies for data-driven science. He has been awarded Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award (2011), Konica Minolta Imaging Science Award (2013), IEEE Photonics Society Distinguished Lecturers Award (2014), and WIRED Audi Innovation Award (2016). He serves as an Associate Editor for APL Photonics (AIP Publishing) and a Young Global Leader for World Economic Forum.
